Book on law and the lawyers

A collection of articles on the subject of health, that the Mahatma wrote in 1906. This little booklet has been reprinted several times and has sold over 1,50,000 copies.

This book is a collection of articles, poems, notes and musings by an Amerian exile. In the preface Knabel writes that he became a war tax resister upon returning from conscripted military service in Vietnam. But with the advent of the 1991 Gulf War of Bush the Elder he decided to leave his own native land forever and become a man without a country, separated from friends and family by a vast ocean. “I could not then have foreseen how much further we would sink into barbarian depravity, thrust by lies into the pathological insanity of State Terrorism” writes Knabel as he readied this book for the World Social Forum 2006 in Delhi. All the proceeds from this book will go to support various activist causes in India.

This book introduces the reader to the persona and the economics of Dr. J.C Kumurappa, a noted Gandhian economist and a collaborator of Mahatma Gandhi. Kumurappa was neither a dreamer nor an idealist bereft of practical experience. Believing that economics must be a humane science imbued with deep ethical import, he tried to solve India’s poverty in a practical and effective way. However his policy prescriptions have been largely ignored in post-independent India. Mark Lindley, a historian, rehabilitates a forgotten pioneer and shows the vial relevance of his ideas to current debates in ecological and development economics. An excellent study, well documented and written in elegant prose.

There are several well known books on Gandhi including Autobiography and The Collected Works which tell the story of the father of our nation. But recognizing that not many people have the time and patience to wade through this voluminous material, the author has condensed and compiled important extracts from these works so as to cover the lifespan of Gandhi. Hopefully the reader will be interested to pick up the originals after getting a taste of the material.
